Matt Graham | former hiring Manager \deputy chief building official for the City of Ottawa

Matt Graham has worked in the building construction industry for 37 years, in multiple capacities enforcing the Ontario Building Code. During his 32 year tenure with the City of Ottawa, Matt has been the hiring manager for job completions with his Branch, specifically for the building inspections division.

During his inspection and management time with the City he provided performance coaching to staff, undertook extensive technical training and was involved with several other organizations such as CSA, the Ontario Building Officials Association and Provincial Ministry of Housing. Matt brings extensive knowledge of what it takes to navigate the City application process in a fast paced and competitive market; a life of continual education and upgrading; to provide a professional approach to complex issues; and insight into life after 20 years of amalgamation.

He has spent countless hours on both sides of the interview table, however, his experience as a Manager to hire the best candidate with the right interpersonal skills, experience and technical knowledge were key to creating a strong and competent inspection group. These skills were essential to deal with the client base and emergencies such as the Rideau Street sink hole. Matt has  always maintained the key to success is marketability, that is, what you bring to the position beyond the posted requirements.

Post retirement, Matt teaches building code courses such as Legal Process for Building Officials; Building Officials and the Law and is actively involved in amendments to the building code. He has also been involved with the Elliot Lake mall collapse proposed changes to the code.

Matt is a Geotechnical Technologist (1981) and registered with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (1983). Among many other certifications he also holds Masters Certificate in Municipal Leadership from York University (2016). Matt continually stays involved with building officials and those looking to advance their careers.

Matt will be joining us again to host more interactive discussion on
Applying for City of Ottawa Jobs.

About Career Constructors
Career Constructors is built around 2 basic beliefs, reflected in the design and simplicity of all of our performance tool-kits and related facilitation, coaching, and mentor services for organizations and individuals:
  • In organizations, to be effective in driving meaningful performance improvement in our turbulent times, the strategies and tactics related to managing "soft skills" and "the hard stuff" can no longer be separated out and handed to different parts of the organization. These must be fused together at employee, team, and mission levels to achieve meaningful and sustainable performance gains;

  • To continue to survive and thrive in the ever-increasingly turbulent 21st century work world, all individuals must develop the core skill set of being able to gracefully and purposefully transition from role to role in a timely & effective fashion.

It spanned across several areas of the organization coast to coast including national operations and service delivery, procurement related project management, vendor management, risk management and corporate governance.

Throughout her career, Jennifer leveraged volunteerism as a meaningful way to grow, a resourceful way to broaden her personal and professional skills, and as a viable means to expand her career contacts - often resulting in rewarding advancement opportunities.

Jennifer retired and returned to Ottawa in 2009 with her family. Jennifer's post-career has been actively filled with a variety of volunteering in support of her sons academic and athletic endeavours, as well as broad based community and social justice initiatives.
